Saltas

You’ll smell it before you see it… toasted bread, melted cheese, a hint of fennel.

Saltas

Follow that trail and you’ll find Saltas, a bright red deli with big ambitions. Twelve-inch ones, to be exact.

These are New York–style Italian subs, stacked high and wrapped tight.

Mortadella and fennel. Burrata and basil. All The Veg for when you want something lighter but just as serious.

It’s food that feels generous. No corners cut, no soggy shortcuts, no cheap meat or filler. Just proper ingredients, treated with care.

The place itself is small but full of life. A window bench, a few stools, a work counter piled with deli packs. When it’s busy (and it often is), expect to wait outside until your order’s called. Nobody minds. It gives you time to swap notes with the other punters or convince a first-timer to try the soft serve with PB&J.

Saltas is run by Oliver and Chloe, the duo behind COIN, the restaurant just across the street that’s become something of a local foodie institution. This place is a nod to Oliver’s great-uncle, Romeo Salta, a New York restaurateur who made Italian-American food a thing long before Instagram.

They care deeply about where things come from. Bread co-developed in Huddersfield. Coffee from Darkwoods. Local when it should be, imported when it matters.

Access is decent, though there’s a small step at the front and space is tight once you’re in. Staff are warm and quick to help if you need a hand.

And, as someone who can’t eat gluten, it pains me to say there aren’t any gluten-free subs… yet. Word is, they’re working on it. The soft serve and coffee more than make up for it.

Saltas is slow-built flavour, wrapped to go. A slice of New York with Yorkshire manners.
